Acer Plans Heavy Ramp of Desktops to Win No. 3 Spot
November 04, 2005
To accomplish the goal of becoming the world's third largest PC vendor, Acer will be boosting its ratio of desktop to notebook shipments in order to take advantage of the significantly larger desktop PC segment, which still comprises 65% of the total PC market. Acer currently ships one desktop PC for every two notebooks. By 2007, this ratio is to be adjusted to 2:3, shipping ten million desktop PCs and 15 million notebook PCs. The company's 2005 desktop target is three million units; just under 2.1 million units had been sold between the first and third quarters of 2005.

As part of the effort to attain this target, Acer will implement an organizational restructuring that gives the desktop PC business greater independence. The business is currently clustered with the company's LCD monitor and TV businesses. Executives also indicate closer ties will be established with supplier Foxconn.
